Hugh ‘Jumbo’ Edwards won two Olympic gold medals in a single hour at the Los Angeles games in 1932; in 1943 as the sole survivor of a Liberator bomber he was rowing in a life raft to save his life. Publisher Gavin first heard this incredible story from Jumbo’s granddaughter Melissa at Henley Regatta in 2016; they are now married and in Water’s Gleaming Gold he draws on family archives to share the extraordinary life of this Olympian, war hero and legendary rowing coach.
In conversation with Cindy Burrowes.
